Drive System

The screws & bolts you use in your product may seem insignificant, but they are an important factor in your overall productivity. The drive system on those fasteners affects the assembly speed, downtime, worker comfort, and the amount of reworked and/or scrapped components, as well as product design. The most common fastener driving problems at many manufacturing facilities today are cam-out, tool slippage, and excessive tool wear. Worn drive tools, reamed recesses, scratches on surrounding surfaces, joint separation and ratcheting noises are symptoms of an ineffective or faulty drive system.

Drive systems with angled side walls are particularly prone to cam-out. Cruciform drive configurations have a tendency to deflect torque upward, instead of applying it into the rotation of the screw. These cam-out forces want to reject the driver bit and push the tool out of the recess. Reamed recesses, damaged drive tools and tool slippage are oftentimes the end result. To combat these problems, additional end load can be applied. For companies concerned with ergonomics and alleviating worker fatigue, however, this is not a viable alternative. Slotted and hex shaped drive systems have similar inherent problems derived from their design characteristics.

Acument™ Global Technologies TORX PLUS® Drive System eliminates most of the inherent problems associated with other drive system designs. The elliptically-based geometric configuration of the TORX PLUS® Drive System maximizes lobe engagement between the driver and fastener and spreads driving forces over the surface area, extending tool life and maximizing torque transfer. The straight, vertical sidewalls virtually eliminate cam-out. Other customer benefits after switching to the TORX PLUS® Drive System are significantly lower drive tool costs and fewer drive tool changes plus improved productivity overall.

The TORX PLUS® Drive System with the AUTOSERT® feature is the high productivity answer to high RPM engagement on an assembly line. This feature allows for quicker engagement of the recess to reduce assembly time, and is ideal for robotic and automated assembly conditions, as well as manual assembly conditions.
